Hendershott Wins PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone Player of The Year Championship

ACTON, ON — The PGA of Canada – Ontario Zone’s 2017 Tournament schedule is nearing an end and this week they were at Blue Springs Golf Club for the Player of the Year Championship. The two-day championship is the final event of the Breenie Cup, a season-long player of the year point’s race. Dennis Hendershott’s steady play found him in the lead on the second day but the tournament wouldn’t be decided until the eighteenth hole.

Hendershott birdied the sixteenth hole on the second day which pushed him into the lead passed the ‘Chase for the Breenie Cup’ leader Bill Walsh. Walsh, playing in the group ahead of Hendershott, bogeyed the eighteenth hole giving Hendershott two shots to work with standing on the eighteenth tee. Hendershott blasted his 5-iron about 250 yards, clear through the eighteenth fairway and his ball nestled-in next to the ninth fairway.

Hendershott tried to re-group by sending his ball through the trees hoping to land somewhere close to the green where he could go up-and-down for the safe two-stroke win. His ball struck the tree, ricocheted hard to the right landing nowhere close to the green. Fortunately for Hendershott, his ball came to rest back on the eighteenth fairway about 150 yards from the pin. Making his third shot count, Hendershott managed to stick his ball just left of the pin giving him and easy two-putt for the 2017 Player of the Year Championship title. Hendershott finished the two days at 2-under par (71,71).

“There are times to be aggressive and there are times to hold back,” Hendershott said after the awards ceremony. “Blue Springs is notorious for their green complexes and these greens were running at 10+, combined with some difficult pin placements I’m not surprised the scores weren’t as low as anticipated. I only hit six drivers for the two days, I’m relatively long but I was able to plop my way around with my 4-iron and 3-iron and still have wedges and 9-irons into the greens. I struck the ball well the past few days, I made a couple bogeys with some scoring clubs but I scraped it together and managed to get the win.”

Bill Walsh’s T2 finish, Braeden Cryderman’s T11 finish, and Ken Tarling’s T15 finish were all good enough to land them on top of their respective division’s Breenie Cup, CFM Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year points races. Blair Breen, son of the late Bob Breen, was at Blue Springs Golf Club on Tuesday on behalf of the Chase for the Breenie Cup presented by Triple Bogey Brewing Co. to congratulate Walsh on his great and successful year playing in Breenie Cup events. The Breen family will all be at Glencairn Golf Club next week for the season-ending Fall Scramble where the official Breenie Cup awards ceremony will take place.
